… l’imaginaire dévoile la réalité

« L’Imagination n’est pas la fantasie ; elle n’est pas non plus la sensibilité, bien qu’il soit difficile de concevoir un homme imaginatif qui ne serait pas sensible. L’imagination est une faculté quasi divine qui perçoit tout d’abord, en dehors des méthodes philosophiques, les rapport intimes et secrets des choses, les correspondances et les analogies. Les honneurs et les fonctions qu’il confère à cette faculté lui donnent une valeur telle (…) qu’un savant sans imagination n’apparaît plus que comme un faux savant, ou tout au moins comme un savant incomplet. »

Silvio Cadelo naît en 1948 à Modena, dans le nord de l’Italie. Il suit un parcours artistique et obtient son diplôme d’enseignement artistique à l’institut A. Venturi de la même ville. Au sortir de ses études, il intègre une troupe de théâtre expérimental dans laquelle il officie en tant que scénographe, acteur et metteur en scène. Parallèlement, il travaille comme dessinateur industriel et affichiste.

A la fin des années 1970, après l’expérience de militance politique comme agit-prop théâtral, il se remet en question. Après avoir hésité un temps, entre la peinture et la bande dessinée, il choisit le 9e Art. Il estime que ce mode d’expression, avec ses caractéristiques de multiplication de l’oeuvre et de sa diffusion en grand nombre, est plus populaire et plus en phase avec l’esprit qui anime cette époque assoiffée de liberté.

Il dessine d’abord pour les revues italiennes Linus, Alter et Frigidaire avant de migrer vers la France où il publie en 1981, son premier album Skeol : un ouvrage au graphisme très inspiré de Moebius - un des pères de la bande dessinée moderne - où l’on découvre sa propension pour les créatures aux morphologies aliènes. Ses êtres singuliers et son univers décalé, il les développe également dans ses illustrations pour le jeu VII Legio d’International Team (1982) qui a marqué une génération de passionnés du jeux de rôles, et dans l’ouvrage Introduzione Alla Zoologia Fantastica

d’Ettore Tibaldi.

En 1982, il publie le portfolio Strappi, une sorte de fresque imaginaire, qui suscite l’intérêt d’Alexandre Jodorovsky. Séduit, ce dernier lui en écrit la préface et lui propose de travailler sur un projet commun. De cette collaboration, naît l’histoire La Saga d’Alandor dont Silvio Cadelo tire deux albums insolites. Pour ce travail, il se donne le défi de bâtir un univers sans aucune référence avec le monde et les images jusque-là connus.

Installé à Paris, Silvio Cadelo reprend pour la revue A Suivre, son personnage « Envie de Chien » créé auparavant, pour le magazine italien Frigidaire. Il imagine une série interactive, alimentée par les idées narratives des lecteurs du magazine, dont le personnage « Envie de Chien » devient le protagoniste emblématique de l’altérité. Celui-ci évolue dans un monde mental où le fantastique et le réel s’accouplent pour créer un univers où l’impossible devient crédible.

Cadelo considère que le travail sur l’image doit être mené comme un large trajet artistique à poursuivre, là où les espaces de la liberté de création sont les plus ouverts et les plus éloignés du conditionnement économique de l’industrie culturelle.

Eclectique et curieux, l’artiste a récemment investi le champ de l’art de l’image en mouvement qu’est la vidéo. Ses vidéogrammes Mutatio Animi et Les Plis de l’âme ont été reçus aux festivals « Vidéoformes » de Clermont-Ferrand en 2009 et « Instants Vidéo » de Marseille en 2010 et 2011

Pris par une permanente réflexion et soucieux de vérifier et consolider ses expériences, Silvio Cadelo obtient en 2013, le DNSEP-ART à l' Ecole supérieure d'art et design Le Havre/Rouen. De fait, il s’éloigne définitivement des cases et des phylactères qu’il juge trop contraignants [1] pour donner vie à son « réel imaginaire ». Les compositions de grande taille lui apportent la liberté d’aborder ses thèmes de prédilection sur des supports protéiformes où les corps imaginaires sont mus par son désir de rupture des clichés et des stéréotypes. Ceci dans le but de renouveler le regard sur le monde en perpétuelle mutation, pour qu’il soit sans cesse celui de la premiere fois.

Enfin, Cadelo considère que la pratique de tout art transforme la vie, change la vision du monde, tout comme elle donne une arme pour l’affronter ainsi qu’un outil pour le comprendre. L’art comporte forcement une ontologie.

... The imaginary unveils reality

"Imagination is not fantasy; it is not sensitivity, although it is difficult to conceive of an imaginative man who would not be sensitive. Imagination is an almost divine faculty which perceives first of all, outside the philosophical methods, intimate and secret relationships of things, connections and analogies. The honors and functions that it accords to this faculty give it such value (...) that a scientist without imagination appears only as a fake scientist, or at least as an incomplete scholar. "

Silvio Cadelo born in 1948 in Modena, in northern Italy. He followed an artistic path and received his art education degree at the Institute A. Venturi in the same city. At the end of his studies, he joined an experimental theater group where he officiated as a set designer, actor and director. At the same time, he worked as an industrial designer and poster artist.

In the late 1970s, after the political activism as experienced in agitprop theater, he called his values into question. After hesitating a time between painting and comics, he chose the 9th Art. He believed that this mode of expression, with the reproductive characteristics of the artwork it entails and its distribution in large numbers, was more popular and more in tune with the spirit of that time when people were thirsting for freedom.

He first drew for Italian magazines Linus, Alter and Frigidaire before migrating to France where he published in 1981, his first album Skeol: a comic-book very much inspired by Moebius - one of the fathers of modern comics - where his propensity for creatures of alien morphologies is discovered. His singular beings and offbeat world were also developed in his illustrations for the game Legio VII International Team (1982) which marked a generation of role-play enthusiasts, and in the book Introduzione Alla Zoologia Fantastica of Ettore Tibaldi.

In 1982 he published the Strappi portfolio, a sort of imaginary fresco, which aroused the interest of Alexander Jodorovsky. Seduced, the latter wrote the preface and asked him to work on a common project. From this collaboration was born the history of The Saga Alandor in which Silvio Cadelo created two unusual albums. For this work, he gave himself the challenge of building a world without any reference to the world and images hitherto known.

Based in Paris, Silvio Cadelo recreated for the review A Suivre his character "Envie de Chien" created previously for the Italian magazine Frigidaire. He imagined an interactive series, alimented by the narrative ideas of the magazine's readers, whose character " Envie de Chien " becomes the emblematic protagonist of otherness, operating in a mental world where fantasy and reality mate to create a universe where the impossible becomes credible.

Cadelo considers that work on the image should be viewed as a wide artistic path to pursue, where spaces of creative freedom are the most open and the most distant from the economic conditioning of the culture industry.

Eclectic and curious, the artist has recently invested the field of the art of the moving image that video is. His Mutatio Animi video recordings and Les Plis de l’âme were received at the "Vidéoformes" festival of Clermont-Ferrand in 2009 and the "Instants Video» festival of Marseille in 2010 and 2011.

Absorbed in a permanent reflection and anxious to check and consolidate his experience, Silvio Cadelo obtained in 2013, the DNSEP-ART at l' Ecole supérieure d'art et design Le Havre/Rouen. As a consequence, he broke away definitively from the boxes and talismans he considers too restrictive (1) to give life to his "imaginary reality". Large compositions give him the freedom to approach his favorite themes on protean media where imaginary bodies are moved by his desire to break clichés and stereotypes. This is in order to achieve the goal of renewing perception of an ever-changing world, so that it is always that of the first time.

Finally, Cadelo considers that the practice of any art transforms life, changes the vision of the world, whilst providing both a weapon with which to confront it and a tool to understand it. Art necessarily has ethics.
